When looking at a band's overall body of work, it's common to group albums by period, considering these blocks as different and often representative of an evolution. In the case of Queensrÿche, "The Warning" and "Rage For Order" are usually seen as equivalent appetizers before the gigantic "Operation: Mindcrime", which would revolutionize metal.
The album's introduction with "Walk In The Shadow" isn't very representative of the band, but it's still effective, with the racy, melodic heavy metal sound that made "The Warning" such a success. Although this track follows a certain discographic continuity, Geoff Tate's vocals on the verse are a little more theatrical and lively, contrasting with the effective but conventional chorus. The melancholy of "I Dream In Infra Red" demonstrates Queensrÿche's ability to create and navigate moods.
Things get a little tougher on 'The Whisper', in which the very 80's keyboards foreshadow the direction that will be taken on "Empire". The cover of 'Gonna Get Close To You' marks the real start of the album. From this multi-colored track onwards, Queensrÿche shows a new, modern face, with its tribal, minimalist use of drums, sober, melancholy guitars, discreet but decisive synths when they come into play, and Tate's expressive vocals, which alone manage to give coherence to the whole. The break on 'Surgical Strike' is so modern (remember, this is 1986), and the use of guitars on 'Neue Regel' is so intelligent, underlining the track's dark atmosphere. Acoustic passages are also much more present, as on the sublime 'I Will Remember'.
If some of the tracks are still a little weak and others very adventurous, this will confuse many uninformed listeners who think they're finding classic heavy metal, but the turn taken by Queensrÿche proves to be exciting here, and there's not much missing for "Rage For Order" to become a masterpiece. - Official website
