A little like their compatriots from Point of View whose first CD was reviewed by our friend Rick in these columns, the Polish Retrospective released in 2007 their first CD with this "Spectrum of the Green Morning" after 1 demo, the second one being transformed into this short album (less than 35 minutes).
Their admitted influences, namely Rush, King Crimson, Tool, Pink Floyd or Porcupine Tree, are not all perceptible, but what they can't deny is that Riverside is one of them. There are indeed many similarities with their Polish friends.
A little attention to the lyrics helps to understand the overall dark aspect of this music as on 'Pink Elephant Missed', which deals with the drug deal or 'Enemy World Vision', which talks about today's world in all its darkness. This track precisely with the hints of Porcupine Tree and Riverside is a pearl that starts nicely, but is full of vitamins with guitars saturated in perfect harmony with the atmosphere. The keyboards, held by Miss Beata Lagoda, are used as a sound track or solo, to perfect very mature arrangements. The atmosphere of the song is given by the voice of Jakub Roszak, which, it is true, resembles that of Mariusz Duda, bass player and singer from Riverside. It's even more striking in 'Some Kind of Hope', which leaves a little cold at first listening, but is endearing after a few passages in the turntable. A feeling that applies to all titles as this music is so deeply developed. Not complex with force breaks and instrumental music following each other at lightning speed, but rather in the construction of an atmosphere, its installation in the listener's mind, and what results. A better production would certainly allow this young band without a label to express all its talent.
The instrumental "Waking up in the Zoo" perfectly illustrates Retrospective's know-how. Guitars and keyboards take pride in themselves, never to demonstrate any virtuosity, but to create a climate that will remain after the last note. 'Regrets and Frightened Child' recalls 'Some Kind of Hope' by its vocal line. The clear guitars that create the sound fabric are reminiscent of Twelfth Night, in this and other titles. "Have in Mind", which closes the record, is a piano-vocals duo in which we find this so particular and slightly morbid atmosphere (the end is very much so, but I let you discover it).
"Spectrum of the Green Morning" is just a demo, and, let's face it, a hell of a business card. To compare them to Riverside would be unfair because their personality is so interesting. My only hope is to see them quickly signed by a label that will showcase this Polish band and allow it to offer us a production that matches their great talent, and a real cast, which they deserve. - Official website
