Remember Ken's Novel? This Belgian band recorded two ambitious concept albums, “The Guide” (1999) and “Domain Of Oblivion” (2005), featuring adventurous, out-of-this-world progressive rock that deserves to be (re)discovered. Two of the band's masterminds Eric Vanderbemden and Bernard Piette, guitarist and keyboardist respectively, decided to team up with young musician Gautier Delco, bassist/keyboardist, and sign their new project Phonya.
Respecting the spirit of the original band to the letter, “Heli1025” is also based on a concept. Eric had discovered a radio by chance in his grandfather's attic. The young boy mistakenly thought that the set would be defective, but to his surprise, it worked perfectly and the sound that came out was warm. Phonya's musical aesthetic fits this description perfectly, taking us on an adventurous sonic journey that's by no means monotonous, and turns out to be very exciting indeed. The ambiences and atmospheres have been thought out to take us into the dream of a great traveler thirsting for the infinite. This is progressive that knows how to take its time, and the tracks flow like a soothing, but never tranquil river ('Breathless' on which the guitar roars while the keyboards continue their impassive journey, 'Let me Out!'). 'Lunar Sun' takes us step by step to the mounts of Selene, reminding us a little of Camel's moments of grace (especially 'Lunar Sea').
The highlight of the album is the ultimate 'The Infinite Game'. Thanks to its cinematic dimension, it traverses different spaces through which the band demonstrates its inventiveness, never tiring of repeating its sumptuous theme. The only reservation is that the trio opted for an all-instrumental soundtrack; the journey is more than enjoyable, but would have been even more immersive if the vocal guide had been activated.
Phonya's first offering, “Heli2025”, is success in every respect. Although the journey is entirely instrumental and would have deserved a voice to guide us better, let's not sulk in our pleasure and let ourselves be lulled by the luminous melodies. - Official website
