"A pleasant record from The Mourning, with an impeccable set-up and no lack of taste, “Hush” unfortunately offers few surprises."

An American band at the crossroads between progressive rock and progressive metal, The Mourning is led by a maculin-female vocal duo that strikes a balance between power and gentleness. They produced a well-received EP (“Theosis”). A few years on, here is their debut album (“Hush”), with a relatively personal musical universe, melodic and powerful, with a healthy dose of modernity.

The notes on this melody-filled album oscillate between progressive, rock and metal. The music, balanced between gentleness and intensity, is adorned with variations, even if the structures may seem linear. The instruments are masterful, the guitars reminiscent of Black Sabbath, while the solo passages provide captivating melodies haloed by a hint of technique ('He Cries'). There's also a gentle touch, as stripped-down guitars adorn the songs with finesse ('Smooth Seas'). All these qualities make for a tasty, pleasant cocktail, the pleasure of which is heightened by modern touches of synthesizers or electro passages shedding new light on the band's music ('My Own Hell'). The album is sometimes reminiscent of Toxic Smile or Ayreon, when the riffs become heavier and verge on metal.

The Mourning releases is a pleasant, impeccably laid-out album, with few surprises. Despite the melodic aspects and the two voices that blend well, “Hush” remains too classic to really make an impression. A pity, because the musicians have musical and instrumental potential that many would envy them.

FEDERICO FAVARO: Abstractions (2025)
DJENT - Federico Favaro's first instrumental EP, “Abstractions” is a fine calling card for the Italian, somewhere between djent and post-rock.
AVATARIUM: Between You, God, The Devil And The Dead (2025)
HARD ROCK - “Between You, God, The Devil And The Dead” is yet another great album from Avatarium, the master of progressive doom in the feminine and most-perfect tenses.
