We don't really know why the band Amplifier goes so long without releasing an album, the previous one "Trippin' with Dr. Faustus" dating back to 2017. This band from Manchester does something new with something old, using a formula that undoubtedly refers to the past and in particular to the rich hours of shoegazing (we instantly think of Ride or My Bloody Valentine) and obviously wants to do what they want and at their own pace (seven albums in twenty years after all!). With "Hologram", it is an EP of 6 tracks in 36 minutes... Patience, because the second part, "Gargantuan", is already being written.
The album goes straight to the heart of the matter with 'Two Way Mirror', which develops complicated arabesques on a background of saturated guitars. It's hard to understand when the chorus or the bridge of the track begins: the complex structure forces to stay focused, even if it's not progressive rock; if we didn't have shoegaze at our disposal, we could almost talk about grunge because of the distortion. On 'Sweet Perfume', the saturated guitars are joined by dissonant melodies.
For the eponymous title 'Hologram', place to the Ride style, with a long musical introduction and a vocal that enters only after 3 minutes. This allows the atmosphere to settle and the voice to slip into its case by bringing a real plus, unlike the previous tracks where the incessant buzz of the guitars tended to take precedence over everything else. The more the album progresses, the more the melodies become harmonious and efficient... as if Amplifier had wanted to keep away the unmotivated listeners. The album ends in beauty with 'Gargantuan (Part One)', a marvel of complex melodic pop that calls for a sequel.
At the end of this rather successful album, we say to ourselves that in 2023 we don't make compositions like these anymore, where we look (sometimes in vain) for the chorus and the melody and where everything happens in the installation of an atmosphere.
