In the year 2000, at the end of the millennium, Godspeed You! Black Emperor released "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" that year. A double album bound to become a cult as the genius of this Canadian collective bursts into the open. For apart from a very specialised part of its audience, F#A# (Infinity), initially released in 1997, had hardly had the opportunity to shine from a media point of view. Fortunately, in 1999, the band released the highly successful 'Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada' EP. The music press then started to take a close interest in this phenomenon and it was time to confirm it by releasing a great second album. It's done with 'Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven'.

Only four tracks make up this double album, but three of them exceed twenty minutes. This is the time needed for the band to build up all the dramatic intensity that is theirs. Godspeed You! Black Emperor literally immerses the listener in its universe, taking them through every conceivable state. From a deep melancholy where the violin pulls out a few tears, an impressive crescendo follows leading to a short but jubilant intense fury, before finally relapsing into a relative calm that is far from soothing and the sounds seem so disturbing too ! That scenario is none other than that of "Static", a track which, in itself, demonstrates the full extent of the Canadians' talent. To the characteristic sound of the style (duality of calm moments / intense moments and use of crescendo), the band adds a 'noisy' side (numerous sound effects and various samples) to its intimate rock and then a large influence of classical music in its musical approach.

A unique collection of sensations, this album has been listened to one after the other without ever sounding the same. The music of Godspeed You! Black Emperor's music has to be deserved and requires to get into its universe. A universe that can sometimes appear quite complex and too cold for some, starting with those who are allergic to instrumental music. However, whatever your preferences may be, "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" deserves to be given a chance.

OTHER REVIEWS
NEAL MORSE: Sola Scriptura (2007)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - "Sola Scriptura" certainly doesn't bring anything to the music in general but what a pleasure to listen to it!
WITHIN TEMPTATION: The Heart Of Everything (2007)
MELODIC METAL - "The Heart Of Everything" is an honest album, perhaps a little more efficient and homogeneous than its predecessor.
