In parallel to the Flower Kings adventure, Hasse Fröberg has been taking off for a decade, surrounded by his "musical companions" with pedigrees that are perhaps less flashy than his original band, but just as effective.
For this fifth album, the singer and guitarist takes the listener into a typically Scandinavian progressive music, but not only. The universe is unsurprisingly connected to the Flower Kings by a flawless inspiration, fed by numerous changes of themes, going from a 70's style progressive to a jazz prog, then leaning towards a more muscular rock, while leaving space to the instruments as well as to the vocals to express all their emotions. In this sense, the opening track 'To Those Who Rule the World' perfectly sums up this tendency, illuminated by some first luminous guitar solos. But far from being satisfied with a project parallel to the one of his original band and which would follow its contours, Hasse Fröberg adds a multitude of ingredients all more tasty than the others.
They are first of all sumptuous choruses reminding Spock's Beard which bring an additional consistency to the powerful refrains ('Shaken and Stirred' for example), which does not prevent the band leaning strongly towards Yes during passages sung with two voices in third ('To Those who Rule the World') And then some very marked winks towards Genesis, a Tony Banks-like piano ('We are the Truth'), convoluted construction like in 'Supper's Ready' ('A Spiritual Change', absolutely enormous title), the whole mixed with very dynamic parts supported by the timbre of Hasse Fröberg which then takes more rough accents, the whole following in a farandole which ends up giving the whirlwind.
And for those who would need a small breath in the middle of all this musical maelstrom, HFMC delivers with 'Every Second Counts' a small unpretentious ballad, inviting some horns in order to stand out from the whole, and even better appreciate the monument constituted by the almost 11 minutes of 'A Spiritual Change' which comes to conclude with brilliance this sumptuous album.
Some people, who have been put off by the Flower Kings for a long time, might go backwards to discover this album. 70 minutes later, what a revelation! "We Are the Truth" is simply a summary of all that the progressive fan can expect from a current production: mastered inspiration, high-flying interpretation and constantly renewed interest. - Official website
