After the artistic and hopefully commercial success of his album "Viking Memories", Skald invites us to celebrate with him the winter solstice, a Nordic tradition, with his new five-track EP judiciously entitled "Winter Songs".
On the menu of this short album, two new compositions, two covers of titles present on the first and second album, and a last track all in emotions, interpreted a capella with only few discreet percussions. For the beginning of the album, 'Jólanótt' takes the usual ingredients of the group: after the introduction with the harp, a binary rhythmic is set up in support of a medieval tonal melodic construction. After two minutes, this one evolves towards another lighter tonality, enriched by a denser orchestration inviting notably the Nickelharpa and the cello.
The same ingredients are taken again for 'Villeman Og Magnhild', with always this concern of lightness which sends the band to walk on the platforms of Blackmore's Night. This tendency is confirmed on the two covers to follow, rightly qualified of intimate version. Thus, 'Grótti' sounds much more aerial than its initial version, the rough male choirs having disappeared, leaving the voice of Justine Galmiche entirely free, while the percussions are also lighter.
Well in phase with its subject, "Winter Songs" sounds like a variation full of lightness, favourable to a listening at the corner of the fire. And finally, in these times, what more could we ask for? - Official website
