Escaped from the Dutch neo-prog band Silhouette, the guitarist Daniel Van der Weiide, aliased for the occasion as Daniel Meadows, offers us a first album for which he invokes an inspiration coming from bands with more muscular words than his original formation: Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Muse or Haken are thus quoted by the multi-instrumentalist author, who has joined Richard Henshall (Haken) and Ruud Jolie (Within Temptation) for two guitar solos.
And the guitar is very clearly the dominant instrument in the (short) 38 minutes of "Modern Emotions", constantly present along the titles, with the instrumental parts being given pride of place, during which the melodies are mostly provided by Daniel Meadows' 6-stringed instrument. If some passages are clearly metallic ('Modern Emotions' in particular), the whole remains very melodic, like a Satriani ('Powerture') or Jean-Pierre Louveton - JPL ('Dance with the Corpse Bride', 'Rebecca').
And for those who are somewhat put off by the overflow of guitar energy in metal mode, "Modern Emotions" contains a good part of much quieter parts, whether in the form of acoustic moments (the instrumental and acoustic 'The Void') or more atmospheric sections present between two guitar riffs. For these, the two guests' interventions will be particularly highlighted, especially Richard Henshall's on 'The Brave'.
The ensemble is very easy to listen to, and this is perhaps where the problem lies, because a feeling of uniformity eventually sets in in the sequence of tracks that more or less reproduce similar patterns.
With this album, it is clear that Daniel Meadows has taken pleasure in writing for his favourite instrument, coming out of the cosy cocoon offered by Silhouette. Without being familiar with the summits of the genre, "Modern Emotions" can be savoured like a light candy, but will not trigger any particular intoxication on my part. - Official website
