In 1996, Mystery released its first album, "Theatre of the Mind", the starting point of an adventure which, 22 years later, saw the group led by Michel St Père become one of the leading neo-progressive rock bands, now recognized well beyond the borders of Quebec alone. And like others before it, the group wanted to give a second youth to this early work, by making it benefit from modern technologies and by bringing it closer to the group's current sound, while preserving the original interpretations.
Even if the formation of Mystery has changed a lot during these two decades (only the only founder Michel St Père remains from the beginning of the adventure), the opening of the album by its eponymous title will take the listener in known territories: all the ingredients that have made the success of the band for a few years were already present, and the proposed remastering brings this title straight to the level of the band's recent publications.
The sense of melody is obviously at the heart of the band's project, distilled moreover by the formidable organ of Gary Savoie who, in addition to having a tessitura equivalent to that of Jon Anderson, adds an extraordinary power that allows Mystery to navigate both in very calm waters, often reminiscent of Camel (acoustic guitar and flute helping) and at the limits of metal ('Black Roses'). Essential binder of all this, the guitar parts of the two Michel (Painchaud and St Père) offers a mix of arpeggios and powerful riffs, without forgetting of course some terrific solos. Composed mainly of short but effective tracks, this first effort does not disdain the slightly more complex developments when the stopwatch allows it, as well as some symphonic accompaniments of the best effect.
Rediscovering an album that has been lost for a while can be a double-edged sword, the risk being to find it somewhat dated. None of this here, not only through a beautiful remastering, but also and above all thanks to the initial quality of composition and interpretation of these different pieces, prelude to a well-filled career in perpetual ascending phase. - Official website
