Witherfall is a Californian progressive power metal band composed of members of Iced Earth and Sanctuary. "A Prelude To Sorrow" is their second album after a poignant "Noctures and Requiem" in 2017. The death of drummer Adam P. Sagan in 2016 continues to influence the band's writing: this latest album does not breathe the joy of life, it is the result of the tragedies that Californians have experienced since the loss of their drummer and friend.

The name of the tracks already evokes the atmosphere of this prelude to grief with 'Shadows', 'Moment Of Silence', 'Ode To Despair' or 'We are Nothing'. The latter, which follows the melancholic intro, is a concentrate of the mix of power and emotional charge that animates the album from beginning to end. In a little over 11 minutes, a flood of riffs and a rhythm of fire rain down on poignant melodies. Rage and anger mix to give way to a touchingly melancholy acoustic break. The epic finale finishes to impose this track as one of the most enormous you will have listened to this year.

Heavy metal tracks follow one another with 'Moment Of Silence' and 'Shadows' in the same epic vein, while melancholy reigns again on 'Maridian's Visitation'. 'Ode to Despair' and 'The Call' will be perceived as small breaths before 'Vintage'. Very close to what you can find in 'We are Nothing', 'Vintage' also exudes a great epic force with a melancholic melody at the beginning of the title, carried by the sadness of Joseph Mickael's singing, while the second half sees the rhythm explode, the vocals hardens and the guitars sharpen, to end in a sumptuous finale that makes your spine shiver between a poignant farewell and a Dantesque solo by Jake Dreyer. Magnificent.

Always in shock, Witherfall draws from his emotions and transforms it into music rich in strength, rage, anger and melancholy. Against a background of melodic power-progressive metal "A Prelude To Sorrow" sweeps away all preconceptions and throws a paving stone in our faces. Hard to remain insensitive to such authenticity. Reminiscent of Iced Earth, Sanctuary and maybe even more Rage for the epic side, "A Prelude To Sorrow" will appeal to metal fans in the broadest sense of the word because it goes beyond the stylistic divide and stands out as one of the major releases of this year-end.
