The iconic singer Sharon Den Adel took a break last year to take stock of her life and devote herself to her family. Unable to write for Within Temptation, she opened the parenthesis of a solo project entitled My Indigo that we had the privilege of reviewing here. This return to his roots seemed to do her a lot of good. So much so that, regenerated, it has regained its inspiration and is now back under the Within Temptation banner with a committed and vindictive "Resist".
Introduced by 'The Reckoning', an energetic title in the form of a war anthem, the album retains the band's characteristic energy, as evidenced by the angry cries of Jacoby Shaddix (Papa Roach) from the very first notes. In the same vein, 'Trophy Hunter' and 'Raise Your Banner' have the same heavy riffs and epic orchestration with another distinguished guest, Anders Fridén (In Flames). For the rest, the album continues the shift begun with "The Unforgiving" and continued with "Hydra" towards a very accessible melodic metal.
It seems indeed quite far away the time of the beautiful's lyrical flights (a few vocalizations high up on Raise Your Banner and Endless War') and the symphonic aspects are rarer, only present through less typical keyboards and some notable choirs on Endless War for example. On the contrary, pop/urban aspects appear on several titles such as "Mercy Mirror" or "Firelight" with less invasive orchestrations. Sharon finds more space to modulate her voice in low tones (on the intro of "Mercy Mirror" or many other passages) that it is rare to see her borrow with Within Temptation since their beginning. Similarly, some less metallic orchestrations such as 'In Vain' or 'Firelight' reinforce this aspect. It is obvious to see here an influence of his My Indigo experience that has guided his way of writing and designing music. 'Firelight' is a striking illustration of this, a very engaging and languid lament, featuring the third guest, Jasper Steverlinck (Arid, Guilt Machine).
"Resist" thus mixes different approaches and takes the band to new horizons with an unchanging common thread: catchy and immediate melodies. All the tracks are potential hits because the writing is very effective. The melodies stay in mind long after listening and only a few passages of "Mad World" or "Supernova" on your turntables will be enough to memorize them and hum them all day long.
It is very difficult to find a weakness in this varied and catchy album. "Resist", in addition to opening up the range of possibilities for Within Temptation, shows the maturity of the band, which is now part of a great variety of writing, while keeping this ease of engaging the listener with captivating melodies. Add to that a flawless production and the exceptional voice of an artist at the top of her shape and you have one of the most promising productions of this year. - Official website
