Three years after a very exciting "Underlying Issues" that showcased Eldritch's know-how in percussive melodies and dynamic prog metal, the Italians are back with "Cracksleep", based on the same model, with the return of Gabriele Caselli on keyboards, not as a full member of the band but as an additional musician.

In spite of a production that could be denser, more massive, the tone is very rough and quite raw. The sound of the guitars is aggressive which is as always compensated by a melodic vocals and, on some tracks, by a rather present keyboard. Thus, while 'Reset' or 'Voices Calling' are directs, 'Deep Frost' or 'As The Night Crawls' are more progressive and benefit from piano and enveloping layers but also from melancholic and catchy choruses, thus accentuating a certain pleasant contrast. The Italians don't hesitate to venture into the arid lands of Thrash with an over-charged 'Aberration Of Nature', roaring with double pedals, toms descents, a hot and twirling solo and above all a radically frantic rhythm. The whole is topped by a keyboard and vocals that bring the right amount of melody. A piece of a very great holding.

It's also difficult not to succumb to these syncopated riffs and rhythm changes, as well as to Eugene Simone's few guitaristic flights of fancy, always at his ease and in technical mastery. It's hard not to tap your foot to the rhythmics that are so efficient, like a 'Silent Corner' that's perfectly mastered. The only downside could lie in the overall sound which remains a little confused because of a mix that lacks finesse, precision and amplitude. The album ends with a languorous 'Hidden Friend' that closes this new chapter in a special way with an aerial piano.

Eldritch dominates its subject with this powerful, catchy and convincing album. The quintet's style has been refined and asserted over time. The balance between power and melody is particularly well found in this "Cracksleep".
