After a tour that resulted in his first live DVD, Knight Area continues the momentum started in 2013 with a more powerful sound than the first albums, more neo-progressive. With a stable line-up and music that is progressive, powerful and accessible at the same time, the expectation of this "Heaven & Beyond" was legitimate.
With an even more vehement production and a resolutely metal sound, Knight Area's music is in line with a supercharged Kaipa or A.C.T. with superb melodies, a magnificent keyboard-bass guitar arrangement that perfectly illustrates the unmistakable and very well built "Unbroken" or "The Reaper" and its stunning melody. The subtle harmony between very accessible themes, heady hard FM riffs and more or less complex structures can remind us of the best Millennium albums (the American band that saw Jorn Lande, and not the Polish prog band).
After a great start and three absolutely magisterial first tracks, the record slow down a little bit, especially with a "Starlight" a little caricatural and especially too repetitive despite a good solo. The eponymous title is a kind of just pleasant ballad that lacks relief. The tracks then follow one another and only barely find the superb sound of the beginning. An interesting work on the atmospheres is to be noted as shown by "Twins Of Sins" which declines dark atmospheres and more direct moments.
The production and sound even more smooth and powerful than on the previous album make this "Heaven & Beyond" an outcome of the new path the Bataves are on. However, despite an absolutely remarkable start, the rest and the end of the album leave us a little doubtful despite the good qualities of composition and interpretation. Beautiful promises that are unfortunately not fully kept. - Official website
