On "War Of Ages", Serenity had integrated singer Clementine Delauney to share the vocals with Georg Neuhauser. The result was a fresh and dynamic record, Serenity's melodic power taking a new dimension thanks to the talent of his singer. Alas, and finally like Axxis a few years ago, the experiment is already over, the band preferring to bring Serenity back to its roots with a male lead singer. The result is this fifth album, "Codex Atlanticus", a concept around the life and work of Leonardo da Vinci. The whole question is whether Serenity will not fall into repetition and whether he will be able to make people forget the good passage in his ranks of the female singer.
Clementine's departure doesn't change the music that much: Serenity remains anchored in a heavy symphonic and melodic style in which vocals remains the main asset with a Georg at the top of his art.
The melody is clearly at the heart of this album. Once the medieval intro is over, the listener enters a warm universe in which the melodic and symphonic spirit of a Kamelot and the fresh heavy tone of a Freedom Call blend together. This gives us beautiful songs like 'Sprouts Of Terror', 'Reason', 'Fate Of Light' and 'Spirit In The Flesh'. Serenity reveals all his soul through pure and melodic vocal parts, efficient choruses and a beautiful symphonic heavy facet.
When Serenity plays it softer, he's just as good: 'My Final Chapter' is a catchy ballad close to Sonata Arctica. And with 'The Perfect Woman' the band hits hard by using backing vocals and having every member of the band sing along with the heavy epic orchestral sound of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. He can make himself even heavier with 'Follow Me', a catchy melodic track. As for the excellent and grandiloquent 'Iniquity', it remains a very good moment of symphonic metal with a beautiful rise in power.
With "Codex Atlanticus", Serenity confirms a crazy talent for strong melodies and for a catchy and never pompous symphonic heavy metal. With such a beautiful album under their arm, the Austrian band succeeds in making us forget the departure of their ephemeral singer and even manages to surpass themselves. - Official website
