Serpentyne is an English band founded in 2010 by the singer Maggie-Beth Sand and Mark Powel who offers with "Myths And Muses" its first original album, "Stella Splendes" which had preceded it consisting only of covers.
Musically, the English band plays a medieval folk tinged with Celtic influences and a few borrowings from world music, the whole being sung in ancient French and English, Occitan and Latin, and sounding like a cross between Corvus Corax, Dead Can Dance and Blackmore's Night. It's a real musical journey in time to which the seven musicians of the band invite us along the 11 tracks that we can imagine playing in a fortified castle during medieval festivals.
'Je Vivroie Liement' and 'Douce Dame Jolie', in a purely medieval style, plunge the listener into medieval France, while the beautiful 'Pastyme With Good Company', dancing and lively, and 'Boudicca', taken from Celtic legends, bring a more folk side to the songs. The whole is embellished by the angelic and pure voice of Maggie-Beth, which works wonders and brings an important soul supplement.
With 'Alexandria', steeped in Greek culture, Serpentyne touches the sublime, approaching the strength of a Dead Can Dance by sprinkling his folk with magnificent oriental influences. We find this spirit in 'Hymn To Cynthia', very bewitching, thanks to the perfect use of medieval instruments. Finally, drawing on Scandinavian culture, 'Valkyries' and 'Freya's Firedance' are excellent moments that plunge us into the heart of Nordic legends.
"Myths And Muses" is a superb record of medieval and Celtic folk music that should delight fans of the genre, opening the mind to many cultures and airing the soul in a beautiful way, confirming that Serpentyne seems well on its way to making a place for itself in the sun of a very rich European folk scene. - Official website
