Polish band coming from the very fertile Polish neo-progressive rock scene, Quidam offers us with this first eponymous album a relatively classical music associated with many other more traditional instruments. A bit like their compatriots Abraxas, who released their eponymous album the same year. Except that the two bands chose orientations of ambiences for the least opposed. Worrying, sometimes even tortured with Abraxas, much more soft, serene and light on this "Quidam".

Quidam, it is above all a voice and especially a vocals in Polish masterly integrated. "Sanktuarium" is the perfect example, beginning on a guitar solo characteristic of the group, it is a few moments later following a break that Emila Derkowska intervenes gently. A delicate vocals, almost fragile... How not to fall under the charm of this Angel whispering such soft words in our ears? But when it is a question of pushing a bit her voice, as for example on the chorus, she ensures!

Quidam, it is not only a voice, but also a collective of very gifted musicians at the service of compositions, more harmonious than complex, clearly betting above all on the atmospheres. The guitar, melancholic, majestic and aerial, does not stop flooding us with magnificent soli. The flutes and other violins, contributing to bring a symphonic and enchanting side, are always delicately used. The various orchestrations and arrangements are at least irreproachable...

Of course, one could find some melodies a little too "sweet" and reproach the group for its few compositions sometimes flirting insistently with pop. It doesn't matter, after all, Quidam's music is not to be analyzed, it is to be listened to and lived! As for the tribute sequence to Pink Floyd or Pendragon (or both) on "Niespetnienie", we can forgive them. It is so beautiful that we do not get tired of it!

"Quidam" is an album that didn't seem to have the means to compete with other more technical, more ambitious or even more professional productions. But it is without counting on the emotional strength of a music apparently simple and yet really worked. An opus to discover as well as a band that will offer us another little musical jewel later.

WITHIN TEMPTATION: The Silent Force (2004)
MELODIC METAL - Within Temptation brilliantly proves that "pop" is not necessarily an antagonist of "metal".
ANATHEMA: Eternity (1996)
ATMOSPHERIC METAL - Eternity marks the metamorphosis of Anathema from a Doom to a more atmospheric style that will never leave them.
