"Leaving aside some of the clichés specific to the Djent movement, Tesseract offers us an "Altered State" less technical but just as intoxicating as its predecessors."

After having dazzled the face of the musical world in general and the progressive one in particular, which propelled it to the rank of the best hope of the genre on the occasion of the release of the sublime "One", it goes without saying that "Altered State", TesseracT's second album, was one of the major releases awaited at the dawn of this year 2013.
Apart from the question of whether the British would confirm all the hopes placed in them, the performance of Daniel Tompkins' replacement -Ashe O'Hara- was going to be analyzed from every angle. Very quickly, the skeptics were quickly fixed: Ashe O'Hara's performance is close to the quality criterias set by his predecessor, with the notable difference that the newcomer now officiates only in a clear register.
Is there a cause and effect relationship? With "Altered State", TesseracT - as the title of the album indicates - evolves and abandons part of the clichés specific to the djent to privilege the melodic aspect of the tracks which are calmer than ever, thus validating the enthronement of the group in the progressive genre.
Better still, as a nod to this now obvious affiliation and as other greats of the progressive scene have done before him, TesseracT lets itself go to jazzy atmospheres thanks to bewitching brass instruments like on the finale "Of Energy - Embers" and especially the magnificent interlude "Of Reality - Calabi-Yau"... If the result is globally less immediate than its previous one, "Altered State" remains a homogeneous album with its share of nuggets that get tamed, listening after listening, like any good progressive album.
Less djent, less focused on the technical aspect than the rest of his discography, TesseracT has taken the daring bet to detach himself somewhat from a style of which he is nevertheless one of the founding fathers. "Altered State" nonetheless remains totally intoxicating and allows the group to more than legitimately join the ranks of the reference bands of a progressive new generation like a Karnivool. - Official website
