At the height of the Glam Rock era, ersatz Mötley Crüe, Guns'n'Roses and Poison bands are springing up everywhere. The days of this genre are numbered, and grunge will sweep all this away, leaving a way of life that Western youth would adopt with varying degrees of goodwill. In 1990, the young London band The Quireboys - also known as The London Quireboys - releases their first studio album after 5 years of existence.

"A Bit Of What You Fancy" lands in record stores and, after just a few weeks, shot to number two in the UK charts. The style is direct, punchy and rather better interpreted and produced than most releases of the genre at the time. The Quireboys' music is a blend of rock, boogie and blues. The band's orchestration, in which piano and harmonica take center stage, sets them apart from the competition, but their main originality lies in their singer, Spike, with his hoarse voice and warm, husky timbre. Imagine the natural son of Axl Rose and Rod Stewart, whose nanny has filled his bottle with Jack Daniels.

This voice works wonders on anthems such as '7 O'Clock' and 'Hey You' (whose single preceded the album's release and reached number 14 in the charts at the end of 1989). Foot tapping, head shaking, in short... it's rock! When the tempo slows down, Spike shows the full extent of his talent, magnifying blues ballads that will send shivers down your spine, such as 'Whippin' Boy', 'Roses & Rings' and especially the sublime 'I Don't Love You Anymore'. Musically, the piano is omnipresent as rhythmic accompaniment, and the musicians are in unison. The melodies are often simple and effective. You feel transported to the docks, where sailors gather in the evenings around a piano to forget their day.

All in all, the Quireboys have graced us with an excellent Blues Rock album, driven by a charismatic leader. It's the perfect kick-off to a long and unfortunately chequered career. "A Bit Of What You Fancy" is certainly the band's most authentic album. From the outset, they put on the ingredients of success, the spontaneity of their youth and original compositions that haven't aged a day.
