The speed with which Beardfish releases its albums has never been a concession on quality. For with seven albums in nine years, or one album every fifteen months, we can say that the Swedish band is prolific. So it's not surprising to find a new album only a year and a half after the excellent Mammoth.
After a few sentences by Andy Tillison as an introduction, we stumble (and that's where the title of the album takes all its meaning) into a very raw and heavy music. We could read here and there the name of Mastodon to evoke the sound of Beardfish version 2012. And really, the powerful, raw and psychedelic Sludge of The Hunter isn't far away in the "Voluntary Slavery", "Turn To Gravel" or "This Matter Of Mine". The mutation started with Mammoth finds its emancipation in The Void and it's without complex and with a lot of success that the voices are surly, the atmosphere dark and the production harsh.
But the more traditional Beardfish is not absent from The Void with the excellent "They Whisper" or the fifteen minutes of the epic "Note". The Swedes' jazz and Zapatist appetites are synthesized in the very upbeat and psychedelic instrumental "Seventeen Again" and the track "Ludvig & Sverker" is offered in two versions, one rather rock and the other as a magnificent piano ballad. There's hardly anything else but "He Already Lives In You" and his Deep Purple encounter with King Crimson that isn't at the level of the rest of the album. The Void ends on a very haunting mid-tempo inspired by the genius of Jimi Hendrix ("Where The Lights Are Low").
The Void will probably provoke a schism among Beardfish fans because the heavy turn will have a hard time creating consensus. For the time being, this album asserts its new identity without losing what made the uniqueness of the Swedes. We can only salute the constant desire for evolution of this band that fits perfectly in the doctrine of the progressive movement. The melodic genius and the great variety make The Void a very good record that confirms the band in its status of major reference. - Official website
