"Slightly less punchy than "Holy Land", "Temple Of Shadows" marks Angra's return to the front of the stage."

Three years after Rebirth and a very disappointing live album, Angra's fifth album comes out. After some line-up changes, notably the departure of André Matos who left to form Shaman, the band remained stable. "Rebirth" was already a tone above the average "Fireworks", but the band was still looking for its marks. What about this "Temple of shadows"?
The band presents us a new concept album coming from the imagination of Raphaël Bittencourt (Guitar). It tells us the story of Christopher Hunter, a crusader who went to war against the ideas of the Catholic Church.
Angra achieves an excellent patchwork of what he knows how to do best. We find a typical German heavy metal track, "Spread your fire", very classical but ideal to open the album like "Nothing to say" in its time. With "Angel and demons", the band slightly tempers the subject. The track is opened by an excellent riff that differs a little bit from the usual Angra. One can also appreciate the progress of Edu Falaschi on vocals, who delivers an exemplary performance throughout the album, approaching his illustrious predecessor, sometimes a little too much.
Concerning the typical speed tracks, we will retain "Temple of hate" with the participation of Kai Hansen, not very original but quite effective. "Winds of destination" is more successful. Under very heavy approaches it brings some surprises. The presence of Hansi Kursch is a real plus and musically Brazil is never far away.
The band offers a wide range of music. Let's quote again "Waiting silence" with its keyboards reminding a little bit Dream theater while keeping the "Angra" touch characterized here by superb choirs. But it is above all the South American influences which logically stand out the most. "Sprout of time" is a superb track mixing Jazz and Samba with a splendid performance by Edu. We also note "The Shadow hunter" which follows the same trend in a heavier track with a slight progressive touch. On the end of the album, we notice especially "Late redemption", very rich musically as well as vocally.
With this album Angra is really back. He signs his most striking opus after "Holy Land" while remaining nevertheless below this one. The only flaws that we can reproach him for come from the few lengths in his final part and the typically heavy tracks that are not very original. "Temple Of Shadows" should finally delight the band's fans and is one of the major releases of the new metal season. - Official website
