After two first solo attempts and a live album, Paul Gilbert comes back from the land of the rising sun with a new album called "Burning Organ". Looking at the cover, on which his name is not yet visible, the listener can see him playing on a burning organ, the instrument at the base of this project.
Much more coherent than his previous efforts, it is still fun. Surrounded by a brand new team, the king of shredders offers us joyful and very rock'n'roll tracks like 'This Is My Religion' with its terrible neoclassical intro and reminding at times Mr. Big, 'Suicide Lover' or 'I Am Satan' with its funny lyrics. This last one, alternating with brilliance dry guitar melody and electric passages, has in its heart a huge and epic doom shot, as timely as unexpected. Paul Gilbert seems to have found here the perfect balance between the dizzyingly technical guitar shots and the simple and effective vocal lines.
Some tracks sound very Hard Rock like a breathtaking 'Bliss', with a bluesy musical bridge, or a direct and punchy 'Muscle Car' in which the guitar and the bass are honored. The Metal even imposes itself on the cover of Donna Summer's hit, 'I Feel Love' on which Paul Gilbert sings (decidedly very well) and he revisits this classic with a welcome velocity and feeling. Even the short tracks remain catchy like the 'GVRO' adapted from Bach or the introductory 'I Like Rock' whose solo was played on more than 100 guitars (bass and acoustic guitars included), all from the artist's personal collection and added one by one.
The average 'I Need My Drum' punctuated by a drum solo, or the Pop 'Amy Is Amazing', will just give a little slack to the whole, without spoiling the party which reaches its paroxysm with an instrumental eponym as successful as addictive (one thinks sometimes of Ron Thal).
The final 'Keep On Keepin' On', light and optimistic, will give you only one desire, that to start again the reading of the whole album. If you only need one Paul Gilbert album, it's this "Burning Organ"! A timeless work that has not aged a bit. - Official website
