On the occasion of the release of "Urd", the Norwegians bring together what fans will consider the ideal line-up... Indeed, as the final of "Universal" could have suggested, Borknagar officially embodies the great return of the former chief producer of the combo ICS Vortex to bass and in the clear choirs in support of Vintersorg. In short, all the fans will agree that all the elements are in place to make "Urd" a key element in the band's discography.

The first notes of "Epochalypse" seem to confirm the impression of "Universal", namely that Borknagar officiates more than ever in an epic progressive black, thus confirming the definitive disappearance of the "folk" colours present on "Origin". Indeed, the first three tracks of "Urd" are declined on the basis of a suffocating recipe thanks to a typically black rhythmic which turns into a prog metal sublimated by the bewitching clear vocals of Vintersorg, ICS Vortex or Lars Nedland... This clever mix reaches its peak on "The Beauty Of Dead Cities" where the clear choruses of ICS Vortex will have for some a perfume of Jon Anderson coupled with the keyboards filled with unctuousness Jon Lord of Lars Nedland: Magic!  "The Earthling" reverses the trend without compromising the effectiveness of a track whose musicality is still as intoxicating as ever!

The epic journey that the Norwegians take us on is still as captivating as ever with, as usual, a sublime melancholic acoustic instrumental interlude with its enchanting violins. "Mount Regency" is in a more extreme register thanks to a typically black rhythmic but the track stands out through a new solo by Lars Nedland with a very Deep Purple scent.

While keeping the main principle behind the musical evolution of the combo, Borknagar has been able to refine his recipe and avoid the pitfalls of previous productions, helped by a dream line-up! As this meeting suggested, "Urd" is undoubtedly an essential album in the progressive black genre in particular and even in metal in general!

OTHER REVIEWS
FLYING COLORS: Flying Colors (2012)
ROCK - The collaboration that gave rise to Flying Colors is fruitful because the progressive orientations specific to many of the group's members have been erased in favour of a more direct composition, whether pop, folk, rock or metal.
ARMORED SAINT: March Of The Saint (1984)
HEAVY METAL - "March Of The Saint" is an essential album of the American heavy metal which represents one of the most beautiful testimonies of this Californian wave which arrived in Europe at the beginning of the 80s.
