It's hard not to imagine that you're dealing with a heavy metal band when you see the cover of this first opus, illustrated with a horseman in armour and a name inspired by a certain Molly, a prostitute in the 17th century who is said to have mutilated and decapitated several of her clients with an axe. Welcome to the club of those who fell into the trap, since Molly Hatchet, led by a trio of guitarists formed by the two founders of the band, Dave Hlubek and Steve Holland, reinforced by Duane Roland, and endowed with Danny Joe Brown of a singer with a deep and rocky voice, carries high the banner of a virile, dynamic and proud southern rock.
Although coming from the same territories as Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet is rather to be associated with Lynyrd Skynyrd, defenders of both Hard and Boogie Rock influences. Launched by a Hell Yeah!, "Bounty Hunter" whips up the carriage of a stagecoach raising the dust of the sunny plains of the South of the United States. Like the runaway rebels of the Confederacy, this eponymous first album shows dynamism and determination to defend certain values. Starting with the traditional guitar cavalcades during which the 3 despérados kick ass with technique and intensity, in particular on the occasion of "Gator Country" entering directly into the legend of the genre with its more than 6 irresistible minutes.
Although more melancholic, the cover of the Allman Brothers Band's big brothers, 'Dreams I'll Never See', is also worth its weight in cases of Jack Daniel's. In the meantime, the Floridians will have imposed their law in New York with 'Big Apple', a Boogie Rock with a light riff but determined lyrics affirming the pride of the South. In the midst of the great rides, Molly Hatchet also takes a few breaks on the occasion of heavy blues Rock songs on which Danny Joe Brown's voice is marvellous ('The Creeper', 'Cheatin' Woman') while Tom Werman's production pays tribute to each performer.
This first episode of just over 36 minutes successfully launches the adventures of these new Confederate rebels. With this first opus, Molly Hatchet imposes his identity with pride and seems already ready to enter the legend of a musical style which does not forgive the lack of determination nor of honesty. - Official website
