"All the tracks on this "Dr feelgood" are pearls cut from a US hardcore that's both glamorous and racy, mixing energy and melody, power and good humor."

"Girls Girls Girls" enabled Mötley Crüe to dominate the radio and TV airwaves, while taking on 200% of the excesses of the Rock'n'Roll way of life of its 4 members. Far from stopping there, the Los Angeles ragpickers ended up putting their lives in danger, with Nikki Sixx even passing through a state of clinical death following an overdose. But like the bad seed, the quartet is still alive, and turns to the reference of the moment in terms of production: Bob Rock. They lock themselves away with him in Vancouver's Little Mountain Sound studios, and do so with such professionalism that Rock claims he never saw them under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the 3 months of recording. But this didn't stop Mötley Crüe from laying down a new manifesto in honor of decadence, even going so far as to present themselves as insane inmates in the album's booklet.

Boosted by Rock's enormous production, which pays homage to every instrument - especially Nikki Sixx's bass, often mistreated by the mix - the eleven tracks on this new opus are a shot of amphetamines. After the ominous intro "T'nT (Terror 'N' Tinseltown)", with its sirens, hospital ambience and emergency braking, the engine is engaged and the car spits out its flames. Mick Mars offers a succession of sharp riffs and solos, Vince Neil leaps around like an imp, the master of ceremonies of this depraved orgy, and Tommy Lee knows how to vary the intensity of his playing to suit each track.

To top it all off, one after another of the guests takes to the stage to provide backing vocals : Jack Blades (Night Ranger, Damn Yankee), Robin Zander and Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), Bryan Adams, Steven Tyler (Aerosmith recording their "Pump" in the studio next door) and the whole of Skid Row all contribute to the tracks being recorded. And there's plenty to get excited about, with "Dr. Feelgood" featuring a fat, relentless riff like a dragster at full speed, and "Kickstart My Heart" inspired by Nikki Sixx's double dose of adrenalin to revive his stopped heart. Mars' motorcycle imitation in the intro, a riff that clears everything in its path, and a talk-box solo after a break that's as deceitful as it is calm - we're spared nothing. Fortunately, the ballad "Without You" provides a welcome break in the middle of the album, and the tension eases gently on the finale with a semi-acoustic "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)" and the ballad "Time For Change" with its unifying chorus.

It's impossible to list all the tracks on this album, because they're all gems of glam US hard rock, combining energy and melody, power and infectious good humor. Mötley Crüe doesn't even hesitate to bring out the brass section ("Rattlesnake Shake"), or the dirty effects (the fly on "She Goes Down"!). The Californian combo has reached the pinnacle of its art, releasing a must-have album of the genre, to be pulled out of its packaging for every party with mates or every dip in morale!
