Since their last studio album in October 2001, "Secrets Of The Runes", and the live album in 2002, the musicians of Therion have taken their time to compose, and no less than 55 tracks have emerged from the fertile minds of this unusual band. To distribute all this material, they released three separate albums, two of them simultaneously, "Sirius B" and "Lemuria". It's the first that interests us here.

Using the same formation as Dimmu Borgir on "Death Cult Armageddon", the classical part has never been so present. From the organ to the sopranos, from the violins to the baritones, everything is done here to give Therion's lyrical dimension more sparkle. And they manage to do so without verging on the ridiculous, which is no mean feat given the difficulty of the style.

The contrast between the saturated guitars and the choir has rarely been so successful. It's a veritable flood of heavy rhythms, largely lightened by the aerial interventions of the various guest artists. While the guitar/bass/drums framework is not particularly innovative, the classical part gives the whole an unsuspected depth that proves exciting and, at times, even brilliant. Death vocals are the only thing missing from this album, but growl fans can rest assured that the next one will have them.

"Sirius B" is a bold, original album that will appeal to fans of symphonic metal, opera and progressive music. It invites us to discover its indistinguishable twin brother. Consider this review continued with "Lemuria".
