After reading the title of IQ's new album, we might have thought that the band had taken a new dark atmospheric style orientation. It's not so. IQ remains in this niche of neo-progressive rock that suits him so well and Dark Matter is only a new facet of it.
The first remarkable detail is the small number of tracks, in fact there are 5 of them sharing the 52 minutes of the album, and 'Harvest of Souls' with 24'29 is the longest IQ creation to date. In terms of music, no surprise, Martin Orford confirms his mastery of keyboards and composition, as does Peter Nicholls in vocals and lyrics.
The first title,'Sacred Sound', could be taken from Subterranea or The 7th House because its construction is so typical of IQ. Martin's keyboards set the background frame of the song on which Michael's guitar solos and Peter's vocals are embedded. Everything is there, even the final break on a church organ background, which makes this track a standard that we will probably hear often during IQ concerts. The next three creations are shorter. In 'Red Dust Shadow' the guitar is mainly acoustic and Peter takes intonations that can make you think of 'H'. 'Born Brillant' starts with a distorted voice on a background of celestial choirs and ends with a repetitive tempo and more "sinful" sounds, the kind of track that stays in your ear. And finally,'Harvest of Souls', which passes very well despite its exceptional duration, is a composition in 6 acts, each with its own rhythm and sounds.
"Dark Matter" is certainly not a revolution in the band's discography, but this album is the worthy successor of the lineage started with "Ever". One more IQ to recommend to all the real fans of these representatives of the English neo-progressive school. - Official website
