If In This Moment owes a good part of its success to its sexy front-woman, the generously built Maria Brink as comfortable in the angelic register as when she yells into the microphone, let's admit that the recipe concocted by the Americans over the past two albums, a skillful and energetic mix of fashionable Metalcore rich in testosterone-filled riffs and female vocals, is not without charm, quite the contrary.

Nevertheless, wiser and seeing the beautiful one often retracting her claws, The Dream has disappointed some of them. The band may have sensed it, explaining the return to the magic formula used on "Beautiful Tragedy" on this "A Star-Crossed Wasteland". Californians remain then faithful to a modern and cool Metal. Tracks such as "The Gun Show" or "Just Drive" can hardly pass for anything else, even if Maria offers in the choruses of the second one clear vocal lines that we can't help regretting that they're not the norm within a well asserted identity.

For when the blonde decides to make emotion speak at the expense of rage, as she does very well on "Standing Alone", the (power) ballad "The Promise" which sees her mate with a male organ or even during the eponymous track on which the shadow of Evanescence probably hovers a little too much to be totally successful, she seduces by her power, even if most of the time the songs allow her to make these two registers cohabit. We also like when the young woman turns into a languorous pussy, witness the most ambienced "The Last Cowboy".

A Star-Crossed Wasteland turns out to be a very good record, certainly calibrated but more personal than it seems and confirms all the good we thought of its genitors and especially of its singer for whom we can only have a deep empathy. Finally, it is a kind of synthesis in the (still) young career of the band, between the explosive dynamism of Beautiful Tragedy and the more Heavy and conventional aspirations of The Dream. In fact, everyone should be satisfied!

MELODIC HARD ROCK - "Black Stone Cherry" is a swarm of blues and southern rock hymns, all more unstoppable than the others.
