After a period of desert crossing due to a record company change and Peter Nicholls' departure, IQ returns with a line up featuring Peter, back on vocals, and John Jowitt arriving on bass.
Released two years after the mediocre "J'ai Pollette d'Arnu", "Ever" is the album expected by fans who have had nothing serious to put in their ears since "The Wake" in 1985. IQ returns to a more pure neoprogressive style and will make you forget its pop wanderings of "Nomzamo" or "Are You Sitting ...". "Ever" is surely the beginning of the sound and the current IQ style. Genesis' overwhelming influence in "Tales from the Lush Attic" and still marked in "The Wake", fades completely to give way to the band's creativity and especially Martin Orford's.
We finally find that voice and that phrasing without which IQ was no longer really himself. This vocal, which is an integral part of the music in the same way as many musical lines on keyboards or guitar seem to prolong the theatrical effect of the vocals. The newcomer, John Jowitt, seems to have found his feet very easily in the band and to be convinced of this, just listen to the precision of his bass playing, especially in "Fading Senses".
There's all of IQ in this album, everything the band will reveal in "Subterranea", "The 7th House" and "Dark Matter". Nevertheless, this album is essential for all lovers of this unique neo-progressive rock served by top-of-the-range musicians. - Official website
