Here comes Beardfish again! A little over a year after their excellent Destined Solitaire and their singer's side-project Gungfly, the Swedes are back with an equally mastered Mammoth.

If the band's composition remains unchanged, the music delivered here is tighter than in the previous opus. Where some Destined Solitaire's tastes were somewhat lost in rather free jazzy developments, Mammoth shows more rigour in the compositions, keeping a "Swedish school" spirit, typical of the 70's with the Hammond in the spotlight, but with a precise and dynamic rhythm, and this touch of "madness" which has a certain charm. We are here often at the crossroads of The Flower Kings, Overhead, Simon Says and even ACT, with an obvious musicality that doesn't disperse and a very fluid technique.

No dead time in this album, which takes us from revisited rock (impeccable 'Platform' in the opening) to canterbury (the instrumental 'Akakabotu'), with a welcome break with the nice 'Inside / Outside' on piano and passing by more tense tracks like the excellent 'Green Waves', where Rikard Sjöblom's voice expresses itself rather better than in the quiet passages. All along, the listener can only salute the mastery of contrasts ('Without Saying Anything', a beautiful closing!).

With Mammoth, Beardfish has struck again. An excellent Swedish-style prog work, in my opinion more melodically pleasant than the previous Destined Solitaire. The only thing missing is the symphonic side to be completely excited, but you can't have everything!

WITHIN TEMPTATION: The Unforgiving (2011)
MELODIC HARD ROCK - "The Unforgiving" is a clearly commercial record. But when the result is a succession of hits, who cares ?
GRAVE DIGGER: Heart Of Darkness (1995)
HEAVY METAL - Surpassing its predecessor and seriously launching Grave Digger's career, "Heart Of Darkness" is an excellent album of epic, fast and melodic heavy metal.
