With two very good albums and a perfectly negotiated return to business, Grave Digger is going to move up a gear with its 7th studio album in a period that is once again very rich for melodic heavy metal.

Indeed, Chris Boltendahl, who is a history lover, is going to launch a historical trilogy around the great adventures of the Middle Ages with a first volume, "Tunes Of War" which deals with the fight for the independence of Scotland since the 11th century through wars and rebellions. Throughout the 13 tracks, with introduction and epilogue, the listener is taken into the warlike journeys of the Scots. Particular care has been taken with the lyrics and illustrations.

From the introduction with the anthem of Scotland "The Brave", we are plunged in the heart of the adventures of William Wallace and his companions of fight. The riffs are incisive and Boltendhal, who has learned to master his rocky voice, adapts wonderfully to the epic side of the songs. "Scotland United", "The Dark Of The Sun" and "William Wallace (Braveheart)" stand out from this majestic set, with their unstoppable choruses, their perfectly placed choirs, and their epic breath of fresh air. The one of "William Wallace" in particular, with its sounds of battles and its breathtaking solo plunges completely into the framework of the album.

After this energetic beginning, the rhythm has the good idea to slow down. Grave Digger then takes the time to tell its story with catchy and efficient tracks going through all the ambiences. From "The Bruce" to "The Battle Of Flodden" through "The Truth", "The Ballad Of Mary" or "Cry For Freedom", the band distills its epic heavy with always this concern of the melody and the riff that hit the bull's eye. Finally with "Rebellion", the band signs another hit that has all the power of an anthem with powerful choruses, a chorus of a rare efficiency, an epic solo and a very beautiful passage with bagpipes.

Grave Digger succeeded in giving a worthy successor to "Heart Of Darkness". It even exceeds it thanks to this epic side and this class of composition which make it a cornerstone of the genre. In fact, "Tunes Of War" propels Grave Digger into another dimension, that of the great Germanic heavy metal.

ALTERNATIVE ROCK - Amplifier probably gave birth to his masterpiece, if he had to have one...
GRAVE DIGGER: Knights Of The Cross (1998)
HEAVY METAL - Less direct than its two predecessors, "Knights Of The Cross" confirms nevertheless the good shape and the writing intelligence of Grave Digger.
