"If Evergrey no longer amazes us with its mastery, it can still do so with its consistency. "The Inner Circle" is still an excellent album of Progressive Metal."

It only took Evergrey a year to release their new album, "The Inner Circle", after "Recreation Day". After having chosen dark colours to present their works in which cheerfulness was far from being the predominant element, the cover of this one can surprise by its white esthetic. Is this a deception or a real desire to change the register?

"We take the same ones and we start again" seems to have been Evergrey's major reflection, as they offer us once again a heavy, nervous and still dark Progressive Metal. Without being a return to the roots, the style of this album is more turned towards "In Search Of Truth" than "Recreation Day". The track containing the speaker's speech is the most striking example.

The keyboards are always discreet and indispensable, in paradox with the very harsh riffs and the hoarse voice, always ideally placed. Once again the use of the double pedal is intense but it knows how to stop to let the female and male choirs, the soli and a new instrument that was missing in Evergrey until now, the violins, express themselves. The latter are not content with being a mere figurehead and bring an undeniable plus to the already very expressive compositions. One or two fast tracks are always very opportunely followed by a soft track allowing to appreciate the feeling of this band which seems to dominate all the style exercises.

"The Inner Circle" is again a no-fault album. It would deserve the highest mark if the surprise effect wasn't a bit blunted by two previous albums in the same vein. If Evergrey doesn't surprise us anymore by its mastery, it can still do it by its constancy.

OTHER REVIEWS
AYREON: The Human Equation (2004)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - "The Human Equation" offers a rock always very personal mixing spatial sounds and big guitars but less striking than in "The Dream Sequencer" or "The Electric Castle".
SPOCK'S BEARD: The Kindness Of Strangers (1997)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - Third album of Spock's Beard, "The Kindness Of Strangers" remains one of the best albums of this band that some consider as a monument of progressive rock.
