In the mid-90s, a part of the Rock population is mourning the death of its icon, Kurt Cobain. Grunge is slowly beginning its media regression, and young people are looking for a new musical trend to praise. The need to identify with this new trend turns to neo-metal, a genre that has already taken off in the early 90s thanks to the two albums "Rage Against The Machine" (1992) and above all "Korn" (1994).

Madonna's label, Maverick, sniffs out the potential, and takes under its wing a young, high-potential band called Deftones, from Sacramento. A year later, "Adrenaline" is released, produced by Terry Date (Soundgarden, Limp Bizkit, Pantera), but it isn't until the release of "Around The Fur" two years later that the band really hits the big time.

The hallmark of this album is above all its raw, garage-recorded sound, but also Chino Moreno's howled, rapped vocals and nonchalant melodies laid over Carpenter's riffs and drummer Cunningham's beats. For his part, and despite the groove present on many tracks, Cheng's bass remains round and warm, unlike his aforementioned counterparts who prefer to adopt a funk feel.

Despite their apparent simplicity (technique isn't really Carpenter's main strengh, as he himself admits), each of the tracks has a real identity, between palpable tension ('Lifter', 'Birthmark'), asphyxiating rhythms ('Noisebleed', 'Engine No. 9') or more swinging tempos ('7 Words'). What all these tracks have in common is their pervasive aggression, between Moreno's roars and a wood-chopping six-string sound. Isolated at the end of the album (at least just before the hidden song "Fist"), the rock gem "Fireal" contrasts with the crushing virility of the first ten compositions through its strong emotional charge.

Like many of their comrades in this recent trend, the first attempt was the right one, and the Deftones soon entered the privileged circle of cult albums. "Adrenaline" is the starting point of their adventure, and already a must-have in a career marked by frequent musical shifts.
