First album of Spock's Beard, "The Light" is nevertheless one of their most accomplished works and especially the album by which Neal Morse and his companions laid the foundations of a particular style that will characterize them on the majority of the productions that will follow. For the fan of the years 2000, it is true that "The Light" could sound a little old-fashioned but it is obvious that at that time, Spock's Beard didn't have the means he will have a few years later for "V" or "Snow". On the other hand, musically speaking, how can we not be enthusiastic about such a richness, and especially a rare maturity for a first album?

Here is a band that, in only one track (the first one), already instills all the spirit that will be his during the years to come. After a soft piano/voice intro, the arrival of the ultra-syncopated theme immediately plunges us into the band's universe. Snarling solo, vocal effects as Neal Morse likes them, constant changes of ambiences going from an almost pop melody to intimate keyboard moments through gypsy interludes, Spock's Beard likes to expand on its subject and explore all the musical universes that are open to it.

Thus, this small new group will deliver a little jewel, 'Go The Way You Go' during which it will allow itself some incursions in the harmonies of the jazz, it will make our happiness with 'The Water' which sounds like a tribute at the same time with Genesis and Pink Floyd while including references to the soul or the jazz and will finish on a 'On The Edge' surprisingly Rock.

In 1995, Spock's Beard announced from the beginning their intention not to play in the shadow of the greats but to be part of them. And what better way to do that than to showcase their talent, imagination and ability to play and experiment with all musical styles?

OTHER REVIEWS
THRESHOLD: Wounded Land (1993)
PROGRESSIVE METAL - First album of Threhold, "Wounded Land" is a very consensual work. Rich and simple at the same time, it should delight the fans of melodic metal and those of progressive.
RAINBOW: Rising (1976)
MELODIC HARD ROCK - "Rising" is probably the best Rainbow album. The Blackmore/Dio pair are at the top of their game here and offer us unstoppable tracks that will become classics of the band.
