This self-titled debut album by Aviv Geffen's Blackfield would have gone relatively unnoticed in the progressive world had it not been for the involvement of a prominent guest. That guest is none other than Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson, who handled all the guitars and vocals on eight of the ten tracks. A very attractive collaboration for any self-respecting fan.

There's no denying that Steven Wilson's influence can be felt on every levels. The production is perfect and the smooth vocals always deliver as much emotion, in solo or in the famous choirs that we find in all his projects. However, the comparison stops there. We're far from the ardour of Porcupine Tree or the sound precision of No Man. Nevertheless, like most of Steven Wilson's work, this album is easy to assimilate.

The tracks are all very short with a simple guideline and modern melodies with occasional light oriental touches that are very catchy and dominated by the acoustic guitars and natural sounding keyboards. You won't find any technical demonstrations or experiments in Blackfield: just very often pure compositions going straight to the heart that will quickly make you want to hum them and will run through your head for a long time.

If you're not put off by an FM verse/chorus style and you're attracted by pretty rock ballads bathed in a melancholic atmosphere, some of Blackfield's tracks should quickly land on your playlists.

OTHER REVIEWS
YES: Magnification (2001)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - Marriage between melodic progressive rock and symphonic orchestra, "Magnification" confirms the return of Yes on the front of the progressive scene.
THE FLOWER KINGS: Retropolis (1996)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - There has to be a beginning to everything and the Flower Kings' one is honourable, certainly, but you won't be blamed if you forget this album.
