After the release of "Souvenirs", which marked a turning point in The Gathering's career, leaving behind an atmospheric past full of riffs for a much more pared-down world, we could have expected anything from this Dutch band. "Sleepy Buildings", recorded live and mostly semi-acoustic, seems to be a continuation of the band's past, as they continue to open up to new horizons.

On this album, The Gathering retraces his evolution through 14 tracks, reworked for the occasion, from his beginning to "If_then_else", via "Mandylion", "Nighttime Birds" and "How to measure a Planet". Only "Black Light District" and "Souvenirs" are not represented here.

If The Gathering's success was in part due to the magical voice of Anneke van Giersbergen, then "Sleepy Buildings" is no exception. Her performance is nothing short of masterful. Whether accompanied by several instruments or virtually a cappela with just a piano as her partner, her vocal qualities and finesse of interpretation are absolutely impeccable. The stunned, unassuming audience seemed to make no mistake, and it was only when not a single sound was heard that the applause and cheers erupted.

You'd have thought that the absence of big riffs on music that often contained them from start to finish would have lost much of the force and even the very essence of what had sent shivers down our spines. The result is a long way - light years even - from this prejudice. The rise in power, from a solitary piano or an acoustic guitar to an instrumental harmony that manages to reproduce an even greater emotional scope than some of the original versions, is extraordinary.

"Sleepy Building" is aimed at a very wide audience. Whether or not your musical culture is metal-oriented, this album should give you a very good feeling, and is a good way to discover The Gathering's musical universe.

OTHER REVIEWS
KNIGHT AREA: The Sun Also Rises (2004)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - If you like neo-progressive rock and especially Collage, you will probably appreciate "The Sun also rises". Otherwise, this album is of no interest.
HAMADRYAD: Conservation Of Mass (2001)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - Influenced by the great progressive artists and especially Yes, Hamadryad offers us however a personal and well constructed "Conservation of Mass" which quickly becomes addictive as the listening goes on.
