Needless to say, each Anathema album is a particularly difficult moment to live in peace and quiet. Two questions come up each time: Have they decided to change their style? If the answer is no, will they succeed in doing as well or better than their previous productions? "A Fine Day To Exit" obviously did not escape these hesitations.

Fortunately, The Anathema sound is present in all its splendour. Clear and expressive voice on intoxicating melodies and harmonies and emotionally as melancholic as ever.

All the usual elements seem to be present on this album. The simplistic side of compositions based on generally slow tempos, a lot of acoustic guitar, a female voice in accompaniment, piano and finally a more advanced use of the synthesizer delivering mostly small sentences with varied sounds in the background.

I said "seems to be" because one of these elements is missing and not the least because it is the famous slow riffs played on the guitar. This absence removes almost all connotations with the style that saw them begin: metal. And even if during more nervous tracks, the guitar is furiously scraped, we are far from the heaviness that characterized the albums already released.

It is hard not to fall under the charm of the Anathema style once again, where the pure technique is totally ignored to simply allow the listener to experience the music. Between "A Fine Day To Exit" and "Judgement" it seems impossible to decide in favour of one or the other. Each of them has its own personality and atmosphere. But why choose one when they both are highly deserving to be listened to...
