Outside their homeland, Pretty Maids no longer have the aura they had in the mid-'80s, releasing records in relative anonymity despite their almost constant quality. The band has certainly suffered from the various musical fashions, from grunge to thrash to death and power metal. With their melodic heavy rock struggling to gain a foothold in the late 90s, they even found themselves signed to a tiny label.

Still led by Ronnie Atkins and Ken Hammer, Pretty Maids have lost none of their ability to compose simple, effective songs, always alternating between power and gentleness. Far from being fashionable, "Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Overdoing" is refreshing and stands for racy, powerful melodic heavy rock. Admittedly, some of the tracks are very classic, but they never lapse into mediocrity or filler.

The first half of "Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Overdoing" features a good number of resolutely heavy tracks that get straight to the point, with an eye for melody and effective riffs, as well as more pop/FM tracks that lighten things up. Snakes In Eden' and 'Destination Paradise' are real sound bombs, the former featuring a beautiful keyboard intro that builds slowly before an ultra-powerful riff and fast vocals speed things up. In the grand Pretty Maids tradition, 'Hell On High Heels' and 'When The Angels Cry' calm things down in a more pop style, with keyboards blending perfectly with the more hard rock passages.

The rest of the album follows Pretty Maids' usual pattern of alternating heavy compositions such as 'Back Off' and 'Only In America', the latter featuring quality lyrics with samples of Martin Luther King, with more rock-oriented tracks such as the splendid acoustic ballad 'With These Eyes' and 'Loveshine', which closes the album in fine style with a Pop/FM tone somewhere between Bon Jovi and Def Leppard.

Despite a few less unstoppable tracks at the end of the album, 'Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Overdoing' remains a great success. Pretty Maids is a band that never disappoints, and its productions often stand head and shoulders above many albums that benefit from more exposure. We can't recommend this record enough to fans of good heavy/rock metal, as it's sure to give them plenty to enjoy and show that Pretty Maids has a life after 'Future World'.

OTHER REVIEWS
ALICE COOPER: Hey Stoopid (1991)
HEAVY METAL - Although very similar to its predecessor, "Hey Stoopid" is a little too classic album, with Alice Cooper resting on his laurels.
APOCALYPTICA: 7th Symphony (2010)
MELODIC METAL - Those who were hooked on "Worlds Collide" can rest assured, they will love "7th Symphony" and will find again this cohabitation between instrumental and vocal tracks.
