After two nice but hesitant albums, Accept's career is struggling to take off. "I'm A Rebel", despite its eponymous hit, was not a great success. Nevertheless, the band quickly went back to the studio at the end of 1980 and released "Breaker" at the beginning of 1981, which can really be considered as the real start of Accept's career.

By finding a strong and striking personality, Accept launched its golden age and a trend that would later give birth to speed metal and Thrash. "Starlight", "Breaker" and "Run If You Can" are concentrates of power, at the same time melodic thanks to the guitar harmonies and the splendid choruses and raging by the vocals and the ultra heavy riffs. The two first ones even sound like hits, made for the stage with their strong and instantaneous choruses, their excellent soli and Udo's heavy voice. This start in fanfare marks a clear transformation of the German formation so much the expressed power is intense and without equal with the competition in this beginning of the Eighties.

After this very intense beginning, Accept calms down the game with a splendid and powerful ballad, "Can't Stand The Night", carried by the very rocky voice of Udo. Then the band starts again the machine with energy with the incisive and powerful "Son Of A Bitch", the fearsome "Burning" close to Motörhead and a more hard rock but very sharp "Feelings".

Finally, in the last part of the record, Accept slows down the rhythm once again. We find Peter Baltes on vocals on "Breaking Up Again" and on the chorus of "Midnight Highway". The latter is the only more commercial composition of the album, very hard rock and with AC/DC influences, while "Breaking Up Again" is a melancholic ballad with very clear and soft vocals and great acoustic guitars.

By releasing all its rage Accept shows itself incisive, powerful and melodic while keeping certain attributes of hard rock. On this "Breaker", it shows an impressive capacity to compose the chorus or the riff which makes wonders. One feels moreover that the group still has a strong margin of progression. The legend of heavy metal is on the march and it is difficult to see who could stop him.

Un groupe trop sous-estimé, né dans le mauvais pays (Allemagne) et couvert par un rival pas toujours très puissant (Scorpions).

OTHER REVIEWS
ALICE COOPER: Killer (1971)
HARD ROCK - Even if it sounds terribly out of date, "Killer" still has a specific charm and a very pleasant 70s side.
DIRE STRAITS: Communiqué (1979)
ROCK - Still very close to its rock roots, Dire Straits refines in "Communiqué" a sound that marked the 80s.
