Led by the guitarist Gary Chandler, with his recognizable playing, accompanied by a certain Martin Orford (IQ), Jadis was also the one who revealed to the public a brilliant bass player, John Jowitt. The fame of Jadis is mainly due to its first two albums, and in particular "More Than Meets The Eye", released in 1992 before being re-released in 2005 in a version enriched with bonus material.

The first track, 'Sleepwalk', is going to define in 7 minutes the style of Jadis: a luminous guitar playing, sumptuous and evolutive melodies, numerous instrumental passages highlighting Gary Chandler's soli, the whole supported by Martin Orford's keyboards and a subtle and efficient rhythm section. No aggressiveness here, just a cheerful dynamic that brings a dose of good mood.

It is also necessary to put forward the perfect arrangement of the titles of this album. Located in the middle of the album and just after a first peak ("Wonderful World"), the parenthesis "More Than Meets The Eye" and the interventions of Martin Orford's flute establishes an oasis of calm in order to prepare the listener to the last two compositions of the record, and notably the instrumental of almost 10 minutes "Holding Your Breath", peak of the album and even of the career of the band. In a real festival of Gary Chandler's guitars, punctuated by dialogues with his keyboard partner (no Hammond or Mellotron here), the multiple melodies will follow one another to offer a real auditory enjoyment.

Because of their rather similar musical styles and a similar band structure (a guitarist/vocalist leader), Jadis was sometimes described as an average copy of Pendragon. In view of this first album, this judgement seems very severe, as "More Than Meets The Eye" is a superb success and must be considered today as one of the pillars of the history of this style.

OTHER REVIEWS
PRIMAL FEAR: Nuclear Fire (2001)
HEAVY METAL - Blending power and melody on highly inspired tracks, Primal Fear's "Nuclear Fire" is highly homogeneous and intelligent, and undoubtedly one of the best of its kind at the start of his decade.
QUIET RIOT: Guilty Pleasures (2001)
HARD ROCK - Guilty pleasure remains an album that looks back to the past and lacks that little touch of success that makes a great album.
