It is almost two years to the day after the release of "Sagas" that the German band Equilibrium released their third studio album. Since this excellent opus, acclaimed by both fans and the media, the band has once again seen its line-up evolve with the departure of drummer Manu Di Camillo, replaced by Tuval Refaeli, and also and especially that of the singer since the beginning, Helge Stang.
The logical continuation of "Sagas", "Rekreatur" finds the very good balance between folk, pagan and metal, both close to the canons of the genre but with the little something extra that makes all the difference. Equilibrium has always had this gift of the melody that kills, the heavy riff that stands out. The band also had the good idea to shorten their record a little bit, offering only 9 tracks for just one hour of music, making sure not to get tired.
The album starts very strongly with an excellent sequence, "In Heiligen Hallen" then "Der Ewige Sieg", two very good tracks both catchy and powerful. We will particularly appreciate the small heavy aspect of the second one, well mixed with throat vocals and folk intonations. As a result, the "Verbrannte Erde" may be less festive but very effective with its metal Viking tone, whose very low voice makes all the difference. This title is not very far from "Amon Amarth" or "Ex Deo" for the epic and warlike musical aspects.
Each subsequent title brings its share of good things. "Die Affeninsel" offers beautiful keyboard parts giving a very folk aspect and an ultra fast general tone, "Wenn Erdreich Bricht" proposes throat and clear vocals, but with a small melody of keyboards very soft well found and refreshing and "Aus Ferner Zeit", on more than 9 minutes, mixes all the influences of the formation, between epic metal, folk, more black parts and movie music atmospheres. This track includes very good soli purely heavy metal andalso offers the luxury of using a female voice on a purely Viking metal break.
But the description of this album would not be complete if we didn't talk about the most important title of the album, which is the gigantic final instrumental, "Kurzes Epos". Referring directly to "Mana", a wonderfull composition that closed "Sagas", Equilibrum proves here over more than 13 minutes that he masters the genre perfectly with passages that are epic, folk, acoustic and always very melodic.
"Rekreatur" is therefore a high quality album, far above the scrum of a genre that is struggling to renew itself. Thus, despite his change of singer, Equilibrium confirms his potential and has all the cards in hand to become one of the leaders of the pagan metal scene. - Official website
