The year 2003 has been rich in reissues for Porcupine Tree with no less than three albums released in extended editions: "Coma Divine" (concert in Rome), "The Sky Moves Sideways" and "Signify" which is the subject of this review.
The first edition of 'Signify' dates from 1996. This album represents the first real debut for the members of Porcupine Tree and through it, they became a real Rock band by including classic drums and heavier guitars. This release features all the tracks from the first edition plus a second CD of demos written between 1995 and 1996.
Fans of Porcupine Tree will not be disoriented by what "Signify" offers. From the very first tracks, the style is immediately recognizable with this famous osmosis between softness and nervousness. We're far from the heaviness of "In Abstentia" but the care brought to the production and the ambiences remain in the band's style.
How to describe the music of this phenomenon that is Porcupine Tree to those who wouldn't know it yet... Soaring, poignant, overwhelming... Adjectives and qualifiers are jostling for one and the same result: pleasure. How can you not marvel at the precision of the sounds, the sequences close to perfection, the joyful musical outbursts, the immediate melodies that you can't get enough of, the suave or heartbreaking songs and the amazing soli...
Once again, it's hard to fault Porcupine Tree. Unless you don't like Rock music in general, "Signify" will enchant all music lovers who don't consider music as a way to fill a silence. In spite of the admittedly accomplished demos, the owners of the previous edition will not see much interest in it, except for the pleasure of jealously possessing all the works of this band which is on its way to becoming mythical. - Official website
