Fifth studio opus for Kamelot, with the eagerly-awaited "Karma". The band's previous album ("The Fourth Legacy") left a lasting impression on fans, who were eagerly awaiting its release. The band decided not to change a winning team. Khan and his band stayed together and kept Sascha Paeth and Miro on production, whose enormous work on the previous album had brought a truly remarkable sound, both powerful and clear. As for the cover art, Derek Gores is still at the helm, with sensuality once again in the dominant purple so dear to the band.
As far as the musical aspects of "Karma" are concerned, Kamelot remains in the spirit of "The Fourth Legacy", both in the structure of the tracks and the huge riffs, and in the emphasis of the melodies ('Forever', 'The Light I Shine On You' and 'Karma'), all under the banner of breathtaking power and purity.
The fundamental difference lies in the atmospheres. As much as 'The Fourth Legacy' took us on a journey through different places and times, 'Karma' takes a more monolithic approach to ambience. The medieval epic takes pride of place throughout most of the opus. Apart from this contrast, which makes the album slightly less successful than its predecessor, "Karma" is a very good follow-up. The (almost) same ballad calms the two opuses magnificently, since 'Don't You Cry' is very reminiscent of 'The Saylorman's Hymn', without plagiarizing it.
The last third of the album features a conceptual trilogy telling the story of the murderous Hungarian Countess Elisabeth Báthory. Conceited, beautiful and cruel, she inspired many bloody legends attached to eternal youth, which the three parts of this highly successful track are imbued with.
"Karma" is thus one of Kamelot's best albums. Without reaching the high standards of its predecessor, it is nonetheless worthy of interest for fans of medieval epic Metal. - Official website
