Following the enormous success of "Ten", their excellent debut album which sold over 11 million copies, Pearl Jam returned in 1993 with an equally delightful "Vs". The most striking feature of this second album is the band's move away from the Grunge movement, to which they had been hastily assimilated, towards a very American rock sound.
Indeed, although the sound of this album is much more raw and rough than that of its predecessor, it is towards the universes of Neil Young, R.E.M., Tom Petty or the Doors that the Seattle band now likes to evolve. But while all these inspirations are well known, the result is no less personal and, above all, impressive in its quality. In fact, right from the nervous 'Go', Pearl Jam display their strengths. First and foremost, Eddie Vedder is in top shape, modulating his voice to move cheerfully from gentleness ('Daughter', 'Indifference') to violence ('Leash'), but also the impressive compositional talent of the band as a whole.
These two strengths outweigh the small imperfections of the guitars' slightly muddled sound and the lyrics, which sometimes seem to have been written a little hastily. If the text of 'Rearviewmirror' is difficult to understand, that of 'Animal' is very simplistic with its 20 words. However, Eddie Vedder, without being an extraordinary lyricist, is capable of much better, as evidenced by the devastating 'Blood', which revolves around the pressure that the media can bring, or the lively 'Glorified G', which evokes the relationship between Americans and firearms. Also worthy of mention is 'W.M.A', with its magnificent bass line, which deals with racism, or the quasi-ballad 'Daughter', which tackles the theme of child abuse.
Driven by its many singles ('Daughter', 'Go', 'Dissident' and 'Animal'), "Vs" was a huge success, selling almost a million copies in the USA in its first week, setting a new sales record. This commercial success is amply deserved and, over and above being an excellent Pearl Jam album, "Vs" ranks among the great records in rock history. - Official website
