Contrary to what one might think, "The Savage Poetry" is not the 4th studio album of the German band Edguy but their very first. Indeed, this record was written and recorded by the band in 1995 when its members were just over 16 years old but was only released as a demo. Surfing on the success of "Vain Glory Opera" and also taking advantage of the craze of the genre at the end of the 90's, Edguy re-releases this album which became almost impossible to find in 2000, having completely re-recorded the tracks with the current line-up.

"The Savage Poetry" starts with an excellent 'Hallowed', very heavy with an unstoppable chorus, both melodic and epic, followed by 'Misguiding Your Life', a track close to Helloween with its sustained rhythm, its speed metal melodic solos well anchored in the 80's and a very high-pitched vocal, and finally 'Key To My Fate', heavier than speed, with a huge chorus and a guitar riff reminding strongly Iron Maiden.

After the ballad 'Sands Of Time', a little too cheesy, there are several good tracks like 'Sacred Hell', a song that has all the makings of an anthem for the stage with its ultra fast rhythm and its effective chorus, doubled by some warlike choirs, or 'Eyes Of The Tyrant', which is nice even if the different parts seem to be different tracks stuck together. Edguy finally concludes his album with a nice power ballad "Roses To No One" quite slow and acoustic and superbly well sung and a 'Power and Majesty' Heavy speed without real catchy.

This reissue of "The Savage Poetry" is a nice gift from Edguy to his fans. The quality of the tracks is very correct and allows to realize the evolution of the band. Edguy succeeds until now a beginning of career without fault and he is not ready to stop...

OTHER REVIEWS
STRATOVARIUS: Fourth Dimension (1995)
MELODIC METAL - Perfecting his style, Stratovarius takes a new step with this "Fourth Dimension", an excellent album combining melody and speed.
AEROSMITH: Nine Lives (1997)
HARD ROCK - Aerosmith is continuing along the same lines as on "Permanent Vacation", namely US hard rock that may be hyper-produced, but leaves no stone unturned when it comes to the ingredients needed for a varied, dynamic and powerful album.
