Whitesnake seems to be now a well-oiled machine and David Coverdale's gang keeps on releasing albums at the rate of one per year. Here is the new delivery that manages to arouse curiosity even before the first notes have been played. Indeed, the emblematic snake has disappeared from the visual to leave its place to a picture of the band revealing a new arrival, the legendary Ian Paice (Deep Purple) who comes to replace Dave Dowle on drums.

While this recruit brings to three the number of former members of Deep Purple, the opening track of this new opus brings an answer as scathing as enthusiastic to the questions that this change of line-up could suggest. 'Fool For Your Loving' delivers its Blues-Hard-Rock with Soul accents while the complementarity of Paice and Neil Murray allows the rhythm section to instill an irresistible groove. Rarely the bassist will have been so much emphasized. With this track and the eponymous title, Whitesnake offers us two classics that are unavoidable from the first notes. 'Ready An' Willing' pours a riff as sexy as groovy, supported by a heady rhythmic, a chorus that remains in the memories and superb guitar harmonies.

Stuck between these two monuments, 'Sweet Talker' manages to be catchy with its frantic rhythm and its keyboard solo while the following one is more charming with a melodic, warm and nice mid-tempo 'Carry Your Load' with an excellent chorus. Two new masterpieces follow with 'Blindman', a magnificent Soul ballad, and 'Ain't Gonna Cry No More' and its Led Zeppelin-like structure. A cover of David Coverdale's first solo album, 'Blindman' gains in depth with this new interpretation, while the charismatic frontman delivers a performance full of emotion. 'Ain't Gonna Cry No More' begins acoustically before building up to a powerful second half in the manner of 'Stairway To Heaven'.

It is indeed a monument that Whitesnake presents us with this already legendary "Ready An' Willing". The arrival of Ian Paice seems to have been the detonator to push each musician to the limit and allow the band to move to the next level and reach the top. From being an excellent band, Whitesnake has become a cult band developing a characteristic and unstoppable style.
