""Turbo" sees Judas Priest decorate their metal with electronic sounds, with surprising results that are not devoid of interest."

With "Screaming For Vengeance" and "Defender Of The Faith", Judas Priest gave us two monuments of melodic metal. But the musical landscape is changing, both in Metal with more aggressive bands like Metallica or Slayer, and in Hard Rock with the arrival of a large number of Glam bands with simple, effective melodies. It's not hard to tell from the cover which direction Judas Priest is leaning. The leather garments have taken on color, while Rob Halford now sports a blonde mane.
In "Turbo", Judas Priest decorates his metal with electronic sounds that relegate the guitars to the background. Of course, the quintet has lost none of its songwriting talent, with effective riffs ('Lock In', 'Reckless') and anthemic choruses ('Turbo Lover', 'Private Property', 'Wild Night, Hot & Crazy Days'). Rob Halford also reveals a new facet of his boundless talent, with his perfectly modulated vocals, almost whispered on "Turbo Lover" or accompanying the rise in power of the mid-tempo "Out In The Cold".
The legendary guitar duels become rarer ('Hot For Love') and less unstoppable. The drums lose their usual power, while most of the keyboards have not stood the test of time ('Out In The Cold'). Judas Priest even present a track that verges on the ridiculous, with 'Parental Guidance' and its stupefyingly silly chorus. This track is a response to an American association which had ranked 'Eat Me Alive' at the top of a list of songs it considered dangerous for young people.
Despite its somewhat linear feel and the few shortcomings mentioned above, "Turbo" remains a quality album that could almost serve as a benchmark for many Glam/FM bands with less mastery of their preferred style than Judas Priest, who is making his first attempt in this field. The fact remains, however, that all these electronic additions, while adorning the British steel, have also seriously blunted its edge. - Official website
