In the very closed club of great but unknown bands, I named Conception. A progressive metal combo from the 90's, this project has the particularity of being the band of the gifted guitarist Tore Ostby before he joined the ARK adventure. Flow is the last album of the band and seems a bit different from the rest of his discography.

Conception has always been far from all the clichés of progressive metal. What makes its great strength are the melodies: ultra efficient, researched and very catchy. The songs very rarely exceed the four and a half minute threshold and even if the musicians seem very technically advanced, we don't get any free demonstration from them.

This latest album is no exception to the rule, but it is a bit disconcerting on the first listen. It is very varied and introduces some new elements for the band, such as electronic effects on the singer's voice. Let's talk about this voice, because it's worth the detour. Very powerful and melodic, it remains limpid and very pleasant: another progressive metal trap brilliantly avoided.

There's everything on this album. Very melodic tracks, like "Gethsemane" or the almost pop "Flow", very powerful tracks like "Virtual Lovestory" or "Tell me When I'm Gone" which reminds Zack Wylde with its mammoth riff, but also very electronic tracks, like "Reach Out" and the dark "Angel" which characterize this new variety to the band. Let's not forget the syrupy ballads "Cry" and "Hold On" which, even if they sound cliché, remain very pleasant and touching.

The last two tracks are among the best. "Cardinal Sin" is the climax of this album, melodic, dynamic, catchy and above all very powerful: it could be described as a "potential hit". The last track "Would it Be The Same" closes the album on a more progressive note, as it is longer and has a slightly more complex structure than the others.

Many are already asking the question: what about Tore? Nothing to say, the talent is already present on Conception's work. He reveals all his know-how, especially in the melodic playing and the solos. This thirst for diversity that characterizes ARK is even very perceptible in the guitarist's playing on this album.

Flow is thus a very pleasant, melodic, powerful and above all very easy to listen to, unlike many progressive metal albums. It exudes talent, inspiration and beauty. An essential discovery, especially in a world that seems to forget that the best things are often the simplest.
