After ten years of cover versions (Judas Priest, Kiss, Van Halen and others) and sometimes painful trial and error, the Abbott brothers' band was determined to survive the '80s. Armed with a promising new singer, Phil Anselmo, hired two years earlier for the "Power Metal" album, and a contract laboriously signed with a major label, Pantera entered the studio in June 1990 with the aim of writing a page in metal history... And what a page it was... At a time when heavy metal was said to be out of steam, "Cowboys From Hell" is a veritable manifesto that punishes the presumption of the media of the time.

Innovative, possessed by a unique groove never before heard on a heavy metal record, Pantera's music shines in its limpidity. All the pieces of the puzzle are in place: a sensational rhythm section, a raging frontman and a guitarist at the top of his game... The tidal wave was as terrible as it was unpredictable. It was a real upheaval for a band that until then had produced tasty but unremarkable heavy glam Rock.

There are still traces of these years of anonymity, such as Phil's falsetto on 'Shattered', relics of a uncertainty that will disappear on subsequent albums. As for the rest, whether it's the writing itself or the production, it's a renaissance. Inspired and original, the album is a constant marvel, where the slightest riff assassinates the listener.

Oscillating between pure Thrash, greasy Heavy Metal and Southern Rock, every moment reveals a marked personality that will only become more pronounced in the years to come. Today, Phil Anselmo is indissociable from this image, so much so that his phrasing, versatility and energy, as well as his almost rapped lyrics, are Pantera's identity. Rhythmically, it's a deluge, with Rex and Vinnie already displaying an amazing understanding, and at the heart of the proceedings, we find the man who wasn't yet called Dimebag, a luminous guitarist who wrote the first pages of his legend in less than an hour. Nervous riffs ('Domination', 'Clash with Reality'), sumptuous soli ('Cemetary Gates', 'Message in Blood'), he splashes his talent across the whole record.

In short, "Cowboys From Hell" is still today, almost 20 years after its release, an absolute masterpiece that every fan must own. A must-have.

OTHER REVIEWS
AEROSMITH: Get A Grip (1993)
HARD ROCK - With its three most famous power ballads, "Crazy", "Cryin" and "Amazin'", "Get a Grip" makes Aerosmith a must-have band and even puts them in the rock pantheon.
THE CULT: Dreamtime (1984)
ALTERNATIVE ROCK - In a Gothic Punk movement with a strong Indian imagery, "Dreamtime" is the shortest album of The Cult but not the least dense and launches the career of a group which will leave an indelible trace in the world of the Rock.
