It is with a certain impatience that I was waiting to receive this new Anathema album. Having literally fallen under the charm of their three previous albums, it is useless to specify that the apprehension of not finding what made the success of this band was great.

After a mixed first listening, the fact that "A Natural Disaster" is the continuity of the previous albums is not in doubt. Indeed, the inspiration and style do not seem to have really deviated. Depending on the mood of the pieces, sweetness and voluptuousness mix with nervousness and aggressiveness. Thus the keyboards, the melancholic clear songs and the gliding acoustic passages coexist with the tearing of the saturated guitars, the screams and the unleashing of the musicians on their instruments. As usual, some of the vocal parts are shared with a female voice that brings an undeniable plus. And as usual the emotional intensity is often exceptional.

However, it is to be regretted that this force that transpired from the beginning to the end of "Judgement" is unfortunately not as impressive. There is a certain inequality between the compositions. The brutal parts are a little too brutal. And some quiet passages become boring (especially the last track).

"A Natural Disaster" turned out to be quite disappointing for me as a fan. It is clear that Anathema tried to transcribe a state of mind through each piece but to want to push the concept too much, the listener comes to stumble and leave the atmosphere. Of course, this disappointment remains relative. "A Natural Disaster" is maybe less impactful than what the band has already done but it definitely remains a top-of-the-range album.
